Fusing classical indian traditions with Hip Hop, Los Angeles based songwriter and rapper, Raja Kumari bridges East and West into a style she calls “BollyHood” while imagining herself as a South Asian American role model for the youth. On her first EP “The Come Up” Kumari brings indian culture to the mainstream with authentic imagery rhythms and sounds mixed with urban hip hop. The Grammy nominated musician grew up studying Indian classical dance and is a proponent in 3 classical styles. After college, where she majored in South Asian Religious Studies, she decided to pursue a career in music. Her initial breakthrough came with songwriting. She co-wrote Fall Out Boy’s Billboard top 10 hit “Centuries” for which she won a BMI Pop Award in 2016. Her other credits include Fifth Harmony, Gwen Stefani, and Iggy Azalea. She recently collaborated with AR Rahman and joined him as a guest performer on his world tour. In 2015, Kumari signed a major label recording contract with Epic Sony Records and plans to release more music worldwide.
